FREQUENTY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are Sisterlocks?
Sisterlocks are tiny uniform locks that are the result of a precision parting grid, and the use of a specialized tool that places the hair into its locking formation. The Sisterlocks method does not require the use of waxes or jells. The small size and parting grid form a lock that is easily styled. Sisterlocks allows women with tightly textured hair to take advantage of a wide range of today's hairstyles without having to alter the natural texture of their hair.

How long does my hair need to be to start Sisterlocks?
In general, Sisterlocks can be started with 2 inches of natural unprocessed hair. Where shorter hair can be caught in a locking pattern, 2 inches will ensure the first stages of locking will be easier to manage during your home care.

Do I need to cut my relaxed hair?
No, you don't have to cut your hair. Sisterlocks can be started with your relaxed length left untouched as long as you have 2 inches of natural hair at the root. As your hair grows, and is set into a lock pattern, your relaxed hair will be trimmed away. Though the transition will take more time, your Sisterlocks technician can help you make that transition. Your styling options will increase as your natural texture grows out.

Can I add extensions to my Sisterlocks?
No, Sisterlocks uses your natural hair. Without extensions, your hair is free of the extra weight that puts tension on the roots. Over time this sort of tension can lead to permanent hair loss. Without extensions, your natural hair is free to grow to its fullest potential, so don't let the idea of short hair for a short period of time rob you of years of freely growing, healthy, manageable hair.

What should I expect from my Sisterlocks Consultant?
You should expect to receive your Initial Consultation, Locking Session, First Follow Up visit, and Customer Starter Kit as a package. Expect to be educated during your Initial Consultation, and test locks set in. Your consultant should give you an idea of what to expect as your locks mature, and then be available to celebrate every phase of your development. Expect a caring and knowledgeable professional.

Is my hair type right for Sisterlocks?
All hair with a curl or wave pattern is the right type for Sisterlocks. Sisterlocks has developed several "locking patterns", one of which is just right for your hair type.

How do Sisterlocks differ from other locks?
Where Sisterlocks are true locks (a matting of African, kinky, tightly curled, nappy hair), they differ from "dread locks, dreads, or traditional" in the technique used to form them. The Sisterlocks method uses a precise parting grid, and a tool to produce small easily styled locks. Sisterlocks does not use any waxes, jells, creams or hair extensions, so everything that can add weight, stress, or hamper your hair growth is removed.

Do I need to have 'fine' hair for Sisterlocks to work?
Not at all! In fact, coarse and thick hair is best for Sisterlocks. Your natural abundant texture adds body and makes styling easier.

Does this mean that once I get Sisterlocks, I can still change hairstyles?
Yes! Sisterlocks is a lot less limiting than extensions because it is your natural hair. You can curl it, braid it, wear a ponytail, cut it, spray or mousse it, wear bangs and parts -You name it!

Will Sisterlocks cause my hair to break or thin?
Just the opposite! Sisterlocks is a gentle technique that requires no chemicals, no excessive tightening, and causes no damaging abrasion to the hair or scalp. You will find that with regular care, your locks will grow and grow, and your styling options will increase.

How long does it take to do?
The initial locking process takes about two thirds as long as getting extensions of comparable size. For medium length hair this means about eighteen to twenty-four hours. The beauty of Sisterlocks is that tightening them as your hair grows out is extremely simple, since there are no extensions to remove and re-set. Retightening sessions are scheduled every four to eight weeks depending on your hair and takes three to four hours.

Can I do the locks myself?
This is not advised. Not all hair types require the same locking technique. Your Sisterlocks consultant is trained to give you locks that will be best match for your type of hair.

Can Sisterlocks be taken out?
Technically, yes, though the procedure is so tedious, you will not want to get Sisterlocks with that intention. Anyway, once you discover the range of freedom with Sisterlocks, you won't want to go back! Finally, there is a way of celebrating the natural beauty of our hair with Sisterlocks!
